The 2008 Central States Curly Show will be held on September 20, 2008 at the same location near Joplin, MO

In addition to the horse show we will again be featuring the Friday night exhibitors dinner, the stall decorating contest, the prize-packed awards banquet, and are planning to host a clinic following the show in conjunction with our local pony club. Check back for more information- we hope to see you there! Entry packets and online forms should be available by early spring.

The Curly Community is the backbone of the effort to build a Curly Horse show circuit.
Your support makes these events possible. We'd rather have your participation than your money,
but If you cannot attend please consider a donation, sponsorship, or ad.

Why are curly horse breed shows important?

For breeders: Breed showing is important to breeders because it offers a unique opportunity for breeding stock, and the produce of farms, to be evaluated on a level playing field with horses of the same breed. Breed shows allow breeders the opportunity to prove their stock, leading to higher sale prices. (see sellers, below)

For riders: Breed showing offers riders and owners the opportunity to network with other curly riders and to ride in an environment where their horse is a peer, not a novelty. For allergic riders, breed shows are the rare opportunity to ride in a competitive environment.

For the public: Curly breed shows do draw some public attendance, but the real PR of curly bred shows are in the long term effects. Well run shows with good awards encourage training and practice during the off season, more off season training means more polished curlies competing and promoting the breed, and more polished horses eventually means more impressive turnouts at breed shows and non-breed specific events.

For our registries: Healthy show circuits strengthen breed's registries. The bulk of associations memberships are usually made up of families, families are drawn to registries based on activities and show programs. More activities = more participants = more registrations.

For buyers and sellers: Curly breed shows offer a unique experience, instead of searching high and wide for a curly, or desperately trying to sell a saddle horse sight unseen across the country, buyers and sellers can use breed shows to network. A seller can show their horse to multiple buyers in one weekend, and buyers can trial as many horses in one day as would usually require several weeks and several hundred dollars in gas or plane tickets.

Thank you to all who participated in the 2007 Central States Curly Horse Show. Thanks to enthusiastic competitors and generous donors our show was a great success! Despite rainy weather, everyone stayed dry in the connected indoor arena, stabling area, and restaurant.

Nearly everyone participated in stall decorating contest and it was quite a site to see all the displays! Our show photographer, Duane Keyes, was really able to capture the spirit of a curly show and, quite literally, photograph curlies showing in a new light. (see Wilder Photography to view proofs.) The show ended around 4pm, allowing everyone plenty of time to clean up before the awards dinner at the on-site steakhouse.

Everyone enjoyed recounting the adventures of the day and after championships were awarded we began raffle prize drawings. Lots of great prizes, including tack, grooming products, feed supplements, and gift certificates were given away!

The Central States Curly Show will be held again in 2008. Check www.curlyshow.com regularly for updates. The 2008 show date will be posted by late fall. We intend to book a slightly earlier date (Late May or early June) next year if we can book this great arena for those popular weekends. If there are classes you would like to see added next year let us know now!

In gratitude to the curly community-

A note to those interested in purchasing a curly horse: Our show will be a rare opportunity to see multiple curlies for sale in one place. If you've been in the market for a curly but are wary of buying sight unseen or traveling hours to look at a single horse- this show is an excellent opportunity to meet and network with multiple breeders and private sellers at once.

A note to breeders & sellers: Want to present your horse to multiple potential buyers at once, and increase your horse's value with a show record at the same time? Exhibiting at the Central States Curly Show is a great way to advertise to a targeted audience- we'll make announcements that your horse is for sale at no charge. more info for buyers and sellers
